This was such a great idea for libraries all over the country! I learned a few things, but, alas, not all 23. Because I just spent a lot of time writing a paper on Web 2.0 for my comp exam (to get my MLIS), I couldn’t face writing more about it here.

Thank you for offering this opportunity, and I will take my time learning those Things I neglected.

Over a thousand people have looked at my pop-up books on YouTube! They are from Mexico and Russia!!

Just wish I had more interesting videos to post. Gotta get iMovie training so I can edit and then post.

Technology – It All Depends on What You Mean (thing 4)

Yes, I love computers and the Internet. Yes, getting my MLIS by taking all the classes online is the best! There’s no gas to buy or mileage to add to my car’s life. And getting every single journal article by just sitting at home and clicking a few links is so much easier than going to the library. So, yes, computer techonology is fantastic. That’s not the technology I want to address here.

Is there anything better than a Dremel?! I love my little Dremel, I even made up a song that I sing while drilling or sanding with it:

“I have a little Dremel. I use it every day,
and when the drill bit’s running
with Dremel I shall play
O, Dremel, Dremel, Dremel, you’re so much fun to use!
Dremel, Dremel, Dremel, please don’t blow a fuse.”

Facebook (thing 16)

Facebook is all about connecting us with others. But not everything on it accomplishes that, at least not in deep an meanful ways. Sure Mob Wars or Scrabulous are fun ways to show off or compete with my friends, and then we can make up by sending some good Karma or Eggs or Flowers.

My favorite things to post and read about from others is what all my Facebook friends are doing at any given moment. I also love to see new and unusual photos they use for themselves. When my dog bit me, my friends seemed to appreciate the picture of my wound.

Never get between 2 arguing dogs!

Wiki in the Works (thing 12)

Created a Wiki page that I hope will be used by all reference staff. Its purpose is to gather bibliographic and biographic info on all the local authors, past and present, who ever called our fair city home. The link is http://heightsauthors.wetpaint.com

Setting it up is still in progress, but that should be done before closing time!

Facebook & Work (thing 16.5)

Just a comment about Facebook. I originally set up this account so I could communicate with my sister in France. Then discovered several other friends also had accounts, so they became my FB friends too. It was great.

Then I started getting Friend requests from co-workers. At first it seemed fine, but now I’m feeling the need for seperation of homelife and worklife. But how do I become UnFriendly with my co-workers? I like them all and want to be their friends in person, but not online.

Is anyone out there reading this? Any suggestions for someone who always worries about hurting people’s feelings?

Picasa & Flickr (thing 7)

About a year ago, my dad come to visit and told me about this great free program called Picasa. He downloaded it for me. At the time, I wasn’t much interested. Because of 23 Things, I recently opened in from my desktop and couldn’t believe how many photographs I’ve got! Picasa is a dream to use and I like the editing features.

Flickr is great – I’ve seen other people’s sites. The only thing I didn’t like about it is that I have to have yet another e-mail address. Because I did this at work, my choice in photos is limited by what Benny G. has uploaded. Check out my site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/missmlis/

LitLovers – This English Major Learns Something New! (thing 10)

Having already created a LibraryThing account for the book group I run at Mac’s Backs, I wanted to try something new. LitLovers.com caught my eye. Turns out it was a great choice!

One feature it has that LibraryThing does not is a course on literature. It functions as an English Lit 101 course does, and since it’s been a V E R Y long time since I had that experience, this was a fun thing to do.

There are 10 “courses” that discuss the important topics like character, plot, pov, theme, etc. They even include short stories that address each topic. Very cool. And all FREE!!!

What I learned from it was that formulaic fiction “reaffirms our basic views about life” and literary fiction “challenges and broadens our views.”

Or maybe I did learn that but had simply forgotten it…

Yesterday, I watched Ella Enchanted for the Library Materials for Children class, finished a very long critical analysis on review journals for the same class, and created a fake grant proposal for the Public Library class. This morning I wrote a 2 page essay on Privacy for the Foundations of Library Science class.

Quite a busy weekend.
